The classic way to look at compatibility between signs is by element: signs of the same element understand each other naturally, and some elements complement each other better than others. It's a useful starting guide — though, as you'll see at the end, real compatibility is read in the two people's complete charts.
The four elements
Each sign belongs to one of four elements: fire, earth, air, and water. The traditional rule says fire and air boost each other, and earth and water do the same.
- Fire — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. They get along with each other and with air signs, who fan their enthusiasm. Energy, passion, and motion.
- Earth — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. They click with each other and with water signs, who bring emotion to their stability. Steadiness and practical sense.
- Air — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. They flow with each other and with fire. Conversation, ideas, and lightness.
- Water — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. They understand each other and earth. Depth, intuition, and emotional bond.
Why this is only the beginning
This element guide works as a first approach, but it's not a verdict: there are "same element" couples who clash and "opposite element" couples who fit beautifully. The reason is that compatibility doesn't depend on the Sun alone. Here we explain why the sun sign isn't enough and what real astrology looks at.
What actually decides it
Serious compatibility compares two complete charts: how both people's Moons, Venus, Mars, and Ascendants talk to each other. For that, each person needs their birth chart properly calculated, with their birth time.

Which signs are most compatible?
Traditionally, signs of the same element and elements that boost each other: fire with air, and earth with water. But it's a general guide, not a fixed rule.
Can two "incompatible" signs work?
Yes. Compatibility depends on the complete charts, not just the sun sign. Many "incompatible" couples on paper fit because their Moons and Venus get along well.
How do I know real compatibility with someone?
By comparing the two birth charts (synastry). For that, each person needs their complete chart, calculated with their date, time, and place of birth.
