Sign Compatibility: Why Your Sun Sign Isn't Enough

Couple looking at the stars: real compatibility compares two complete charts

Real compatibility between two people isn't decided by sun sign. "Aries doesn't go with Capricorn" makes for a fun headline, but serious astrology does something much more precise: it compares two complete birth charts and looks at how their planets cross. That's called synastry, and it's the difference between a magazine horoscope and a real reading.

The sun-sign myth

Reducing compatibility to Sun-versus-Sun leaves out almost the entire person. Your sun sign is one piece among many: two people of the "wrong sign" can fit perfectly if their Moons and their Venus get along well. That's why so many people feel "our combination shouldn't work" and it does.

What real astrology actually looks at

A serious compatibility reading crosses several points from the two charts:

  • Moon with Moon: how each feels secure and how they take care of each other emotionally.
  • Venus with Mars: attraction, chemistry, and desire.
  • Sun with Moon: how one's essence complements the other's emotions.
  • Ascendant with planets: the first impression and how they see each other over time.

None of these crossings can be done with just two dates: it takes two properly calculated charts.

Why you need two complete charts

To compare Moons, Venus, and Ascendants, each person needs their complete birth chart — and for that, their birth time. Real compatibility starts when you stop looking at two signs and start looking at two whole maps.

Frequently asked questions

Does sun-sign compatibility work?

As a game, sure; as serious analysis, it's not enough. The sun sign is one piece. Real compatibility is studied by comparing two complete charts, called synastry.

What is synastry?

It's the comparison of two birth charts to see how their planets relate: Moon with Moon, Venus with Mars, Sun with Moon, and more. It shows dynamics the sun sign doesn't reveal.

Do I need both people's birth times?

For a complete analysis, yes: the time defines each person's Ascendant and houses, key to compatibility. Without it, a partial analysis is still possible.
