To get your birth chart you need exactly three pieces of data: your date of birth, your time of birth, and the city where you were born. With those three, the real position of the planets in the sky at your exact moment is calculated. If you're missing the time, you can still get part of it — and here we explain which part.
Step 1: gather your three pieces of data
- Date — day, month, and year. The easy one.
- Time — as exact as possible. The one that changes the result the most.
- Place — the city, because the sky looks different depending on where you are on Earth.
Step 2: find your birth time
This is where almost everyone gets stuck, and it's worth saying before a form surprises you: the time isn't a whim. Your Ascendant (the sign climbing the horizon at your birth, i.e. how you present yourself to the world) and your twelve houses (the life areas where each planet acts) depend on it. Without the time, those two blocks can't be calculated.
Where to look, in order of ease: your birth certificate, the hospital record or file, your country's civil registry, or asking someone who was there. Many certificates have it printed and no one had ever noticed.
Step 3: calculate the chart
With the three pieces of data, an astronomical engine places each planet in its sign and house. Watch for the difference that decides everything: most free tools give you back the graphic — the wheel with symbols — and separate template paragraphs. That's data, not a reading. What's useful comes after: understanding how those positions talk to each other.
What if I don't know my birth time?
You're not left out. Without a time, a solar chart is calculated: your planets by sign (Sun, Moon in most cases, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the rest), which already says a lot. What's left pending is the Ascendant and the houses. If you find your time later, the chart gets completed.
